For us in Cupertino Quota, Bess is a wonderful mentor and role model, always cheerful with a friendly word for everyone. Bess really exhibits the true spirit of Quota giving, as exemplified, particularly, in her donations to the Wanda Frey Joiner fund.

Nicol Lea Herris, husband Jack and friend Betty Bidwell came to Cupertino. Everyone had a good time looking, repairing and buying jewlery. Many were impressed with Jack’s new book, “Tumult in the Clouds”.

Cynthia Sine-Yee Lee Memorial Scholarship

Background:

An active and enthusiastic member of Quota International of Cupertino, Cynthia Sine-Yee Lee was a lifelong advocate of higher education. Born in Macao, China in 1926, her university studies were interrupted, when she came to the United States in 1949. Once here, she continued studies at Skidmore College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and later Columbia University, where she received a Masters Degree in Education. Her daughter, Nicôl Lea served as Quota International President in 2004/2005. Cynthia Sine-Yee Lee and her family eventually settled in Cupertino, opening The China House Restaurant, a local landmark for over two decades. Before her death from cancer in 2007, she supported various community organizations. When her family donated money in her memory to Quota International of Cupertino, members set up this scholarship in her name as a fitting tribute to a cherished member.

Description of Award:

$1,000 Scholarship for a graduating Senior who is deaf or hearing impaired at Fremont Union High School District will be awarded by Quota International of Cupertino.

The scholarship will be awarded based on academic achievement, extra-curricular activities and community service.

Quota International of Cupertino is dedicated to providing community service with particular focus on assisting the hearing impaired and disadvantaged women and children in the community.

The Cynthia Sine-Yee Lee Scholarship assists graduating high school seniors who are deaf or hearing impaired to pursue their academic career by providing this scholarship. This award may be used at a college, university, vocational or technical school of the student’s choice.

To apply, each candidate must submit an official transcript, two letters of recommendation and the scholarship application. The Interview Committee will schedule and conduct a brief interview with the applicant prior to making the selection.

The scholarship will be awarded after careful consideration of the applicant’s involvement in extra-curricular activities both in school and the community; excellent citizenship; special needs and community service.
